This is part of a choose your own adventure story, ‘Through the Black Door.’ Go to the first chapter here. Or head to the previous chapter: ‘Pursue the Black Horse’ or ‘The Mysterious Bouquet.’ Check out the chapter guide here. See the bottom of the story for notes.

If you don’t try to run past the falling tree, you won’t have a chance at catching the black mare. But it’s too dangerous. You will have to let it go.

With a loud slam, the tree falls down a short distance away; mud splashes your face from the impact. You sigh. The tree has thoroughly blocked your path, and the mare has vanished.

It’s disappointing. You thought the mare wanted you to follow her.

Regardless, you don’t want to stay still in this dark forest, especially during this thunderstorm. So you choose another forest path and keep trudging through the woods.

Eventually, the storm dissipates. The rain stops and the sky clears. You can see the moon and stars again, not that they bring you much comfort, since you lost the black mare.

After a long time, you finally reach the exit to the forest. In the distance, up a hill, you spot a strange blue light.

What do you do?

  1. Investigate that blue light.
  2. Ignore the light. Search for the black mare instead.

Note: Novus Grey wrote the original first chapters, but she has deleted her account on Medium, and unfortunately did not respond to any emails or messages. Hence why I’m writing new chapters to replace the ones she deleted, so that the later chapters I wrote can still be playable. These new beginning chapters contain the same basic plot but have different details.
